Pune's schools, colleges and industrial belt put out uniform work every year, and the
contract is not won on stitching quality - everyone bidding can stitch. It is won on two
numbers: how consistent the sizes are across the run, and how much cloth is left on the
floor at the end of it.
The fiftieth piece has to match the first
Each size is drafted from the measurement chart rather than scaled by eye, so a size 34
cut in week three is the same size 34 that was cut in week one. That is the difference
between a client who reorders next June and one who takes the contract elsewhere after a
parent complains that two children in the same size got two different fits.
Fabric waste is where the margin lives
Cutting one garment at a time with shears typically wastes eight to twelve per cent of the
cloth. A marker drawn by hand across a bulk lay is often worse, at twelve to eighteen. A
computer-nested marker runs at three to eight. On a plain cotton uniform run that gap is
the margin, and it is why bulk work justifies the machine faster than the labour saving
alone ever does.
A mid-contract change stops being a crisis
Twenty extra sets in three sizes, a sleeve length the school wants revised, a batch that has
to be re-cut. On a stored draft each of those is a reprint, not a re-draft - the pattern
that produced the first hundred produces the next twenty identically, whoever is at the
table that day.
And the same shop still takes the boutique work
Blouse, churidar, kurti, gents wear, uniform and kids models are all preloaded, so a bridal
order in the morning and a hundred-piece school run in the afternoon come off the same
software, the same printer and the same laser. A uniform unit does not have to turn away
the work that fills the gaps between contracts.
Pune's tailoring institutes train hundreds of students a year, and that is a different
problem from running a shop. A shop needs one cutter to be excellent; an institute needs
thirty students to reach the same standard while one faculty member watches.
Every student drafts from the same logic
In hand drafting, students copy one master's hand - and quietly inherit that master's habits
along with the skill. Here every pattern comes off the same tested logic, so a student's
blouse is drafted the way the industry drafts it, not the way one teacher happens to. The
standard is in the workspace rather than in whoever is on duty.
Faculty time moves to the part that needs judgement
When the basic draft is reliable, teaching stops being correction of the same twenty
mistakes and starts being fit, fabric behaviour, finishing - the parts that actually take a
teacher. That is also what makes a bigger batch teachable without a bigger faculty.
Students leave with the workflow the trade uses
Batch after batch learns on the same models and the same workflow the industry runs on, so
placement-ready skill comes built in rather than being picked up in the first six months of
a job. A student who has drafted, printed at full scale and cut from the sheet has done the
actual job before being hired to do it.
